Shelter

Good shelter for keeping the rain, pine cones or tree leaves and bugs from falling on you and a warm comfortable place to sleep are two things necessary for a good camping experience.  If you have a motor home or large camp trailer you can literally take your home with you; with a small camp trailer you might need additional sleeping room.  Otherwise one or more tents will likely be part of your camping equipment.  With young children you will probably want a larger family tent so that they can share it with you; maybe even one divided into separate rooms.  Older kids can sleep in their own large/group tent or individual one- or two-person tent(s).  Teenagers will probably demand to be in their own.

The Coleman Weathermaster 3-Room Tent provides lots of room for your family, sleeping up to 8 people. Click on its name to see more details. Or click HERE to see a selection of family and individual tents.

Don't forget that when camping under trees there are things other than pine cones that will descent upon you that you need shelter from; sap and bugs can be just as annoying as falling pine cones.  So you may want shelter for things other than just sleeping, like eating or playing board games.  A large tent like the Coleman 15 x 15 GeoSport™ Screenhouse (click on its name for more details) is good for this, or you can suspend large tarps to provide shelter from minor rain storms or falling pine cones.

A Good Night's Sleep

Whether you are at home or away a good night's rest is important.  It is probably even more important when camping, given the higher level of activity that will be involved.  You will want to make sure that you are both warm and comfortable.  You can replace your sheets and blankets with sleeping bags, for one or two people but you need to make sure that you have one that will keep your warm in the climate you will be camping in.  There is a variety of sleeping bags and bag types available for different needs and climate requirements, most are rated with the lowest temperature at which they will keep you warm, and you will need to do some planning to pick the right one(s) at the right price for your needs.  Except for Mummy sleeping bags you can generally take two identical one-person sleeping bags and zip them together to form a two-person sleeping bag.

The Coleman Fairmont™ Full Size Sleeping Bag is a quality general purpose sleeping bag, but if you are over 6 feet tall you may need the Coleman Colossal Sleeping Bag. Click on either bag's name for more details or click HERE for a selection of sleeping bags.

Sleeping on the ground is seldom comfortable for either old or young, so you'll need some padding under your sleeping bag.  Again, you will find a variety of ways available to keep yourself off the cold, hard ground:  foam pads; cloth pads; air mattresses; hammocks; cots; and even gathered leaves or pine needles (bugs included at no additional charge).  Foam or cloth pads are nice if storage space is not a problem and you won't be hiking too far to your campground.  And a small hand pump can take the work out of using air mattresses; and don't forget a repair kit.  Once more, you will want to plan for your needs depending on where you will be going and what you will be doing.

The Coleman Rest Easy Pad or the Coleman PVC 5-Tube Air Mat may be what you need.  Click on either name for more details or click HERE for a selection of pads and mattresses.  Or maybe you would rather have the Coleman Forester 25 x 72 Folding Cot or the Hammock Bliss Single Hammock.  Click on either name for more details or click HERE for a selection of cots and hammocks.
